How the Veg Box Scheme works

To receive veg boxes from us, you join Transition Turriefield as a member for one season. A membership subscription can be renewed each year.

Membership to veg box shares and contents:

Membership subscriptions are available for 21 or 30 boxes per season, delivered between mid-March and Christmas. The 21 box option is delivered fortnightly throughout the season; the 30 box option is delivered weekly between mid-July and the end of November, with fortnightly deliveries at all other times.

Each subscription is equal to a 1-2 person veg box. Double membership can be purchased if you would like larger quantities. There are also 2 half shares available of the 21 box option, for smaller households.

Throughout the season your boxes are likely to contain a selection of:

March, April, May, June:

Salad, spinach, purple sprouting broccoli, kale, cauliflower, cabbage, chard, herbs, pea shoots, spring onions, Chinese cabbage, carrots, beetroot, leeks, spinach, chard, pak choi, celeriac

July, August, September:

Tomatoes, aubergines, chillies, cucumber, salad, courgette, khol rabi, garlic, kale, turnip, radish, spring onion, sweetcorn, cabbage, celery, peas, French beans, broad beans, broccoli, cauliflower, leeks, onions, shallots, marrow, carrots, potatoes, herbs, spinach, chard, sprouts

October, November, December:

Carrots, potatoes, onions, leeks, cabbage, romanesco, kale, neeps, spring onions, herbs, salad, peas shoots, broccoli, cauliflower, beetroot, spinach, chard, sprouts, parsnips, pak choi, celeriac

Turriefield free range eggs and locally baked artisan bread, can be included in your box as supplementary items, either as a regular item, or a one-off request.

Costs and Payment:
Membership subscriptions are paid in 10 monthly instalments at the end of each month (March to December), or in one single payment made by 5th April. For the 2016-2017 season membership costs:

21 box option: £21 per month, or £210 single payment.
30 box option: £30 per month, or £300 single payment.
Half size, 21 box option: £12 per month or, £120 single payment.

Boxes are delivered on a Friday. We operate a delivery service to households in Sandness, Walls and the Brig 'o' Walls. For other areas we use drop off hubs, which are either bus stops on route to Lerwick, or rural shops. We are happy to discuss alternative drop-off points, but cannot guarantee we will be able to accommodate requests. Veg boxes can also be picked up from Turriefield if preferred.

Signing up:
When you contact us about becoming part of the scheme, we will let you know how long it is likely to be before you can receive a share of the crops. If we can't offer you a membership subscription straight away, we will add you to the waiting list and tell you how many households are waiting ahead of you.

Once a place becomes available, we will ask you to complete a Member's Subscription Agreement. By completing the Member’s Subscription Agreement you are committing to supporting us and making payments for the whole season.

Risk of crop failure:
By becoming a member of Transition Turriefield and the CSA veg box scheme, you are agreeing to share the risk of crop failure due to factors such as: inclement weather, pests and other events or disasters for which no one can be held responsible. We do not buy in supplementary produce in the event of crop failure, or poor harvest, to top up boxes.

Crop Surpluses:
We grow as much produce as possible on the land we have available, and do not isolate production specifically for veg box shares. Production is balanced between the veg box shares and other markets, however, we ensure veg box shares are fulfilled first. We will sell produce to other outlets, when we have excess crops that would result in veg box members receiving more produce than the household would be able to eat before spoiling.

Veg box members may request extra quantities of specific crops (for example beetroot for pickling). We will provide additional portions when all veg box shares have been fulfilled and there is a surplus of the crop requested.

Changes and cancellations:
By becoming a member you commit to paying for, and receiving, a veg box share for one season: mid-March to the end of December, in any given year. This commitment helps us plan our growing season and know what expenditure we can make throughout the year.

Volunteering commitment:
As a member Transition Turriefield and the CSA veg box scheme, we ask that you, or another member of your household, become involved in our work by volunteering with us for a minimum of 4 hours each year. There are many different ways to be involved, such as coming along and helping us sow, plant, weed or harvest the produce; weigh and pack; with administration or with the running of the project

A suggested contribution is 4 hours per year. For example, attending our local volunteer mornings on a Saturday 10am-1pm, followed by lunch (provided by us) until 2pm. You may contribute more voluntary hours if you wish. We welcome suggestions for other types of voluntary involvement.
