We have been experimenting with growing vegetables in Shetland’s wild and windy climate since 2008. We’ve learnt a lot since then about creating growing conditions that allow us to produce most types of vegetables despite the difficult conditions.
We use no chemical fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides, just muck, homemade compost and seaweed, with plenty of attention to keep the bugs at bay. Minimal machinery and keeping things local reduces the environmental impact of what we do.
In 2013, with the help of a Climate Challenge Fund grant, we established the ‘Carbon Classroom’ arm of our project. The Carbon Classroom delivers training and education and provides support and advice by sharing everything we’ve learned about growing food in Shetland. Helping the Shetland community to grow more of their own and lower their carbon footprints.
